Head Start / ECEAP Programs
What is Head Start? What is ECEAP?
Head Start/ECEAP Programs are family development programs that provide many FREE services to eligible children and their families. Head Start is funded by the federal government, and ECEAP (Early Childhood Education Assistance Program) is funded by Washington state.
Who is Eligible?
Families receiving public assistance grants and children in foster care are eligible, as are many parents with limited incomes who are working or in school. The majority of children enrolled in ECEAP and Head Start programs are four years old by August 31. Many Head Start/ECEAP Centers also enroll three year olds. Additionally, Head Start Family Child Care enrolls children ages birth to five. The Early Head Start program serves pregnant women and their children, birth to three. Head Start/ECEAP does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color, religion, marital status, sexual orientation including gender identity, national origin, sex, age, or mental/sensory/physical disability.
What Services are Provided?
Head Start/ECEAP are family focused programs that provide the following services:
EDUCATION
- Preschool experience geared to the individual child
- Activities which build self-esteem, social skills, and physical skills
- Atmosphere which celebrates diversity
- Developmental screenings
- Small classes
HEALTH & NUTRITION
- Nutritious family-style meals
- Medical, dental, vision and hearing screenings
- Health and nutrition education for children and families
FAMILY SUPPORT
- Parent groups and classes
- Information and referrals to community agencies
- Opportunities for personal growth, empowerment and leadership
- Job training and employment programs
How Can Parents Get Involved?
Some ways the whole family can be involved in Head Start/ECEAP are:
- Help make major program decisions by taking on leadership roles.
- Gain job readiness skills and work experience.
- Attend parent meetings and classes, such as parenting education and GED classes.
- Volunteer in the classroom.
By joining the Head Start/ECEAP community, parents meet new people, gain self-confidence, learn about community resource, develop job skills, and help their child get a good start in school.
