Town-hall Meetings Scheduled to Discuss Closing the Achievement Gap
Don’t miss your opportunity to make your voice heard on closing the achievement gap on Saturday, Nov. 22, in Tacoma.
Washington state faces a growing crisis in the education of African-American students. Almost 40 percent of African-American students in Washington state are not graduating on time with their peers. A state advisory committee is holding a series of town-hall meetings in coming weeks to explore causes and solutions to the African-American student achievement gap.
The town hall meetings are your chance to share both your experiences and hopes to help us identify what we must do to make every school a great place for our children. Your perspective is valued and necessary for us to write a powerful and effective plan to close the education gap.
Feedback from the public meetings will help shape the committee's final report, which will be delivered to the state legislature in late December and will offer specific recommendations on ways to close the gap.
A meeting in Seattle took place Nov. 13 and another is scheduled Nov. 18 in Spokane. West-side parents, community members and staff have a final opportunity to participate in Tacoma from 1-3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1615 6th Ave., 98405.
